        Statistics and Engineering Quality Laboratory Industrial Engineering Universitas Brawijaya sent two teams to contest the 8 Hours Design Challenge “APDeC” Asia Pacific Design Challenge who held by Universitas Katolik Parahyangan, Bandung. The two teams submitted were Brawijaya 1 team with Fachrezy Pangestu Widi, Roby Kurniawan and Destantri Anggun Rizky and Brawijaya 2 with members Billy Anugrah, Muzzaki Sani and Tara Aldania Nahara. Of the two teams submitted, the Brawijaya 1 team won 1st place in the race which was held in 8 hours.

8 Hours Design Challeapdecange “APDeC” Asia Pacific Design Challenge held on November 1, 2017. APDeC this year has the theme “Design for Special Population: Mobility and Sustainability”. The race was followed by 19 teams which included a team from the Philippines. The competition begins with the introduction of a user or customer that is divided into 3 users ie small children, elderly, and the third is with a blind person in the form of blind. Furthermore, the contestants are given 8 hours to design a product that suits the needs of randomly selected users. The 8 hour time included the interview time used by the participants to get more information about the user. Each team is given a capital that will be used for interviews, observation, and internet costs. So the team must allocate the capital given for the sake of design in accordance with the needs of the user while still paying attention to the costs incurred. In addition, to designing products intended for each user, the team also has to prepare a presentation of their respective products to three judges who will come to the table per team to listen to the presentation and ask questions about the products and designs that have been made and give an assessment on each team.

             Brawijaya 1 team managed to attract the attention of the jury with the design of the product made by Can Helper (Cane and Cap Helper for Blind People). This design consists of two tools, cane helper in the form of a stick and cap helper in the form of a hat. In cane helper, there are sensors to detect objects around a radius of 2 meters. This wand vibrates when it detects an object. The advantage is that this stick can be folded and made with a strong material. As for the helper cap equipped sensors that serve to detect objects that are in front of or above the head. It is hoped that these sensors help mobilize the blind and prevent them from crashing objects around their heads.
